Dr. David Bowden has directed the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra since 1997 and will be retiring at the end of the 2024-25 season after completing 28 years at the helm of the orchestra. In this special presentation for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Indiana State University, Maestro Bowden will debrief the THSO’s November 2 concert, Heroism & Hope, as he provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at what it is like to be the Artistic Director and Conductor of a professional orchestra. While conducting the orchestra is the most notable part of the duties of the conductor, music-lovers are often shocked to learn that 95% of a conductor’s time is spent on non-musical, administrative activities. For fans of the orchestra, this is a must-attend Wednesday Presentation as Maestro Bowden pulls back the curtain on the life of a symphony conductor.

Brahms’ glorious Third Symphony is a hidden gem, an odd mix of heroism, formal rigor, and emotional depth that sets it apart. Writing in the picturesque town of Wiesbaden on the Rhine River, Brahms incorporated his personal motto, “Frei aber froh” (Free but happy) throughout the piece.

Written as Stalin’s Great Terror campaign made music a matter of life and death for Soviet composers, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony is a searing search for hope in a time of darkness and oppression.

Our newest venue for a THSO Presents! Chamber Concert is the gorgeous Church of the Immaculate Conception at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.  This cathedral-like structure is an astonishingly beautiful space with superb acoustics. The 75-minute program will feature soprano Caroline Goodwin, harpist Melanie Mashner, and concertmaster, Erina Buchholz.  Selections include Shenandoah, Schubert’s Ave Maria, The Last Rose of Summer, Mozart’s Alleluia, Vaughan Williams’ Five Variants on ‘Dives and Lazarus,’ and more lovely pieces whose sound will bloom in the richness of the acoustic space.

The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to present a preview of our 2024-2025 season with members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)! As the THSO approaches their 100th season, the Symphony will also share exciting updates about their plans to kick off the next century of music making. Join Principal Percussion, Keegen Sheehy, of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra as he discusses and demonstrates multiple instruments from the percussion section of the symphony for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Keegan will share a brief history of several common percussion instruments in the orchestra and present a demonstration of the instruments’ mechanics and performance. The presentation will conclude with a short solo performance and Q&A with the audience.

A new fundraiser hosted by the Terre Haute Symphony League! Artistry in Sound will feature a musical recital performed by the Angelus Duo centered around Paul Jenkins’ painting Phenomena Near Baber Woods on display at the Swope Art Museum. The peak of the recital will showcase the world-premiere of “…yet so close” written by Terre Haute native and award-winning composer Jack Nesser. Celebrating Terre Haute’s total solar eclipse in April 2024, the THSO joins the community’s A Total Eclipse of the Haute collaborative event. The symphony will perform a wide variety of musical styles including selections from The Planets by Gustav Holst, John Williams favorites like E.T. and Star Wars, music from Apollo 13 by James Horner, the X-Files theme, and much more heavenly music. Integrated video projections will take us out of this world!

Join the THSO String Quartet for Sunny Days & Starry Nights in Washington, IN on March 27th! This concert will commemorate the upcoming total solar eclipse happening in Indiana on April 8, 2024. Immerse yourself in an evening of beautiful string music that explores the wonders of our universe and the enigmatic realm of space. This is a FREE event, but seats are limited to 275.
